Every Entrepreneur Has a Story

Every Entrepreneur Has a Story

Why no one builds a small business alone

No one wakes up one day with a fully formed business, unwavering confidence, and all the answers. Every entrepreneurial journey is a story in progress—one shaped by uncertainty, learning, and the people who walk alongside us.

For me, mentorship has been one of the most constant and grounding forces through every chapter of my life: my career, my education, moments of personal struggle, and now, the journey of building Storyline Chocolates. It's why this month matters so much to me.

January is recognized as National Mentoring Month, a time to celebrate the critical role mentors play in shaping individuals, businesses, and communities—especially for youth and emerging entrepreneurs.

According to statistics shared by mentoring.org, young people who have a mentor are:

  • 92% more likely to volunteer in their communities
  • 85% more likely to report improved outcomes in their education
  • 75% more likely to hold leadership positions in clubs or sports teams
  • 74% more likely to say mentorship contributed to their long-term success

These numbers are powerful, but the real impact of mentorship goes far beyond statistics.

Why Mentorship Matters

As human beings, we are naturally drawn to success stories. We admire people who appear to have achieved their goals and wonder how they did it.

Social media often presents success as polished and linear, highlighting milestones while hiding struggle—especially in entrepreneurship. This creates the illusion that success is achieved alone.

In reality, behind every successful entrepreneur is a network of mentors. These are the people who listen when ideas feel fragile, challenge us when we're stuck, remind us of our strengths when self-doubt creeps in, and sometimes gently talk us out of giving up.

Entrepreneurship Is Not a Solo Journey

For the past six years, I have served as a Business Advisor mentoring hundreds of entrepreneurs. Again and again, I've seen how lonely entrepreneurship can feel. Small business owners carry immense responsibility, make countless decisions, and often feel pressure to have everything figured out.

I've supported clients with business planning, marketing, raising capital, intellectual property, operations, and human resources. But some of the most meaningful moments of mentorship happen outside spreadsheets and strategy sessions.

Entrepreneurs have trusted me with deeply personal challenges—financial stress, health concerns, grief, imposter syndrome, and their fear of failure. In those moments, mentorship becomes less about having the right answers and more about offering presence, encouragement, and perspective.

Learning Through Setbacks at Storyline Chocolates

I'm only able to show up for others as a mentor because I've been supported by powerful mentor relationships myself. At every stage of my life, someone has helped me see possibility when I couldn't see it on my own.

Storyline Chocolates was originally planned to begin test marketing in January. Instead, we encountered an unexpected setback that required us to pause. It has been frustrating, humbling, and emotionally draining.

When something like this happens, the inner dialogue can be harsh:

  • Why didn't we anticipate this?
  • With all my education and experience, how am I still making mistakes?
  • Is this ever really going to happen?

The truth is that setbacks are part of entrepreneurship at every stage. Even experienced founders stumble. What makes the difference is having mentors and a supportive community who help us process challenges honestly, learn from them, and keep moving forward.

With the guidance of our mentors and village of support, we are overcoming this setback and look forward to launching later this winter.

Gratitude for Mentors Who Make a Difference

As we recognize National Mentoring Month, I want to pause and say thank you to everyone who serves as a mentor.

Your time, belief, and willingness to show up—often quietly and behind the scenes—shape lives in ways you may never fully see. You help build confidence, resilience, leadership, and hope.

No one succeeds alone. And mentorship remains one of the most powerful tools we have for building stronger entrepreneurs, stronger businesses, and stronger communities.

I invite you to reflect on the mentors who have shaped your story—and, if you can, take a moment to thank them.
